Abstract

This paper describes selected product innovations that have occurred in the textile industry thanks to the application of nanotechnology, biotechnology and textronics. The larger context is the opportunities and risks associated with the development and commercialisation of these processes. Beyond providing products to satisfy basic human needs including clothing and interior decoration, the modern textile industry manufactures functional textiles with a wide range of applications. Apart from the positive innovations that have occurred in the industry, the paper also looks at those factors that make the development and commercialisation of textiles difficult as well as concerns about their impact on human health and the environment during the use and maintenance of products.
